Next.js vs WordPress
Should a business website be built with Next.js or WordPress?
The short answer
WordPress wins when a non-technical team publishes content weekly and the site is mostly pages and posts. Next.js wins when the site has application behaviour, a custom checkout, a logged-in area, or performance and search visibility are commercially important. Building the wrong one costs more in the second year than either costs in the first.
Side by side
| Criterion | Next.js | WordPress |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Applications, custom flows, high-performance sites | Content-led sites, blogs, brochures |
| Non-technical editing | Needs a CMS layer built or connected | Built in |
| Build cost | Higher up front | Lower up front |
| Running cost | Low, often near zero hosting | Hosting plus plugin licences |
| Performance ceiling | Very high | Depends heavily on theme and plugins |
| Security surface | Small, no plugin ecosystem | Large, plugin-driven, needs patching |
| Custom logic | Natural | Fights the platform past a point |
| Bilingual and right-to-left | First-class | Plugin dependent |
| Who can maintain it | A developer | Many agencies and freelancers |
How to decide
Choose Next.js when
- The site contains an application: bookings, accounts, dashboards, custom checkout
- Page speed or search visibility directly affects revenue
- You need genuine Arabic right-to-left alongside English
- You expect to integrate with your own systems
Choose WordPress when
- The team publishes content often and must not need a developer to do it
- The site is pages, posts and forms, and will stay that way
- Budget is the binding constraint right now
- You want a large pool of people who can take it over later
What most comparisons leave out
The middle path most comparisons ignore: a Next.js front end with a headless CMS gives non-technical editing and application behaviour together. It costs more than WordPress and less than rebuilding in eighteen months, and it is the right answer more often than either extreme.
